What is Wave || Vibratory motion || Vibration || Frequency || Time in Wave || Main points for entry test

Periodic Motion:

The motion which repeats after the fixed interval of time or equal interval of time is called periodic motion

The motion which repeats after the fixed interval of time or equal interval of time is called

periodic motion.

 A motion which repeats itself in equal interval of time is called periodic motion.

Examples: Earth revolves in 24 hours, Swing motion, Rocking Chair.

 Note: Only vibratory motion is not only periodic motion but also circular motion is periodic

motion.

A motion which repeats in equal interval of time is called periodic motion.

Vibratory Motion: To and fro motion is called vibratory motion

 Back and forth motion is called vibratory motion.

Vibration: One complete round trip of vibratory body is called vibration.

 Frequency or Pitch:

 Number of oscillations per unit time is called frequency.

 Vibration per second or cycles per seconds.

 Pitch term is used only for frequency of sound.

 Frequency of rocking chair is not pitch.

 S.I unit of frequency is cycles per second (ଵ

or Hertz (Hz).

 Symbol of frequency is (Nu).

 It is reciprocal of time period.

Simple Harmonic Motion:

Simple Harmonic motion is a special type of (force) periodic motion where the restoring

forces on the moving displacement of object and acts towards the equilibrium position of

object.

 Acceleration acting on a body is directly proportional to the displacement of the body

measured from its equilibrium position.

 A vibratory or ‘to and fro’ motion in which acceleration us directly proportional to –ve

displacement.

 SHM is always directed towards its mean or equilibrium position.

 Acceleration and displacement are always in opposite (a -x ) direction.

 The negative sign shows the direction of acceleration is always towards centre.
