Types of Longitudinal waves with examples Agha Haseebullah Khan

What is Longitudinal wave?

The particles which move in parallel direction is called longitudinal waves.

 It is second type of wave, it is also called mechanical wave.

 Sound waves are longitudinal waves.

 Spring moves in horizontal direction is longitudinal.

 There are three types of longitudinal wave

 Audible waves, infrasonic wave and ultrasonic wave.

 Audible Waves:

 Sound waves are audible waves, they move in parallel (longitudinal) way.

 Range of sensitivity of human ear is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

 Infrasonic Wave:

 Infrasonic waves are longitudinal; its frequency is below the audible range (below the 20

Hz).

 Earthquake, thunder, and volcano waves are an infrasonic wave.

 Animal, birds and fishes can hear infrasonic waves as like elephant and whales.

 Some animals communicate through infrasonic wave, such as: Rhino, hippos, elephant,

whales, octopus, and pigeons.

 Ultrasonic Waves:

 Ultrasonic waves are longitudinal waves.

 Their frequencies are above the audible range that is 20 KHz to 100 KHz.

 These can produce more than 100 KHz.

 These rays can produce 25 billion Hz (or 25000 million = 25000,000000 hz).

 These rays are used to break down the kidney stones.

 These rays are used during pregnancy with no harm unborn baby.

 Human cannot hear the voice of frequency of (ultrasonic).
